It seems USCIS just got a new round of layoffs…will perm processing time get longer this year? My employer says if I don’t get an h1b this year, they will help me apply for green card directly. however, to keep the status, I may have to opt for day 1 cpt…if the perm waiting time is too long, I wonder if it is worth to choose to stay in the US
normally it takes 1-2 years for perm, but not sure, maybe it will take up to 3 yrs…
as for if you want to stay in the USA or not, my suggestions is asking yourself how desire you wish to work and live in the USA in the following 30 yrs.
take myself as an example, if I am under the same situation, I will wait for my i-140 is approved and then work in different cities/countries until I can apply for my i-485.
it’s a really long wait …
yeah it took me 2 yrs for perm + i140 approval, but now it might need to take more times…
My friend’s perm was processed for over 500 days, FYI
The good old days when PERM used to be processed within several months are not coming back
Some resource to check perm wait time
wow.. it seems that Perm currently takes really long time
it’s getting longer and longer
Yeah, if USCIS is going through layoffs, it’s possible that PERM and I-140 processing times could get longer, though it’s hard to say for sure.
It’s a good sign that your employer is willing to sponsor you for a green card even if the H1B doesn’t work out. In that case, using Day 1 CPT to maintain status is a common choice, but you’ll need to make sure the school is compliant and you keep your SEVIS status in good standing.
Whether it’s worth staying in the U.S. really depends on your long-term goals and how much delay you’re willing to deal with. If your employer is serious about the green card process and you have a clear plan, then staying could still be a good move—even if the timeline stretches out a bit.
lol maybe they won’t have the manpower for rfes?
