How long did your CPT approval take?
It usually takes 1-2 weeks
The time it takes to get CPT (Curricular Practical Training) approval can vary depending on your school’s policies and processes.
Step | Estimated Time |
---|---|
Submit CPT application (including offer letter, course registration, etc.) | Same day to a few days |
DSO review and issue updated I-20 with CPT authorization | 1 to 7 business days (some schools may take up to 2 weeks) |
You can start working | Only after CPT is approved and your I-20 is updated with CPT authorization |
Great question.
For your first every CPT, it’s no guarantee it’s going to be the first day of school, because technically your CPT i-20 would process when the university receive your SEVIS, and you would usually want to wait until the OPT’s running out to transfer. So technically a week of wait is appropriate for most schools, and that’s on your first term. Better let the management know about a couple days non-paid leave.
For renewing your CPT, in the future, the school has your SEVIS and can process your CPT a lot faster, they will ask you to submit renewal 1 month earlier to your current CPT end, and will seamlessly issues you new CPT I-20.
Mine took about 3 business days after I submitted everything. I made sure my job offer letter and CPT course registration were in place before applying.
