Before OPT ends, how many months in advance is it appropriate to apply for a CPT university?

I would like to know about the timeline. How long does it usually take to receive the admission result after applying? When can the I-20 be obtained? How long does the application preparation take?

I’ve consulted with couple friends who went through this. they said that admission only takes about 1-3 days. but to keep it safe, you should apply 1 month before the semester start. I know some school even provide expedited service that can issue i-20 within 48 hours.

Great question, @captain_CJ — timing is everything when transitioning from OPT to CPT.

:bullseye: Ideal timeline: Start 2–3 months before OPT ends

Here’s a rough breakdown:

:page_facing_up: Application prep (transcripts, resume, SOP): ~1–2 weeks
:open_mailbox_with_raised_flag: Admission decision: Usually takes 1–3 weeks, depending on the school
:bookmark_tabs: I-20 issuance (after acceptance + submitting job offer, etc.): another 1–2 weeks
:receipt: SEVIS transfer & CPT approval: Must be completed before your 60-day grace period ends

:graduation_cap: Bonus tip: If you’re applying for scholarships, some schools have deadlines up to 3 months before the term starts — so planning ahead can help you save money and stress.

Bottom line: early prep = more options, fewer headaches.
