Hi everyone, I’m currently completing my bachelor and planning to pursue master degree at a Day 1 CPT school in the U.S., aiming to work in the tech industry afterward. However, I’ve noticed that most Day 1 CPT schools are not highly ranked, and I’m concerned about how this might affect my job search.
Would U.S. companies recognize my master’s degree and internship experience from China? Also, how much does the school’s ranking matter when applying for tech jobs in the U.S.?
The tech industry seems to care about your degree and school ranking much less because the skills they are looking for are practical and can be assessed through portfolio projects and technical interviews. However, with the current climate, it’s more like all juniors are having a hard time finding a job in tech, degree from a prestigious school or not (except maybe the networking that might result from going to a good school). Not having a degree from a highly-ranked school in itself won’t be a significant disadvantage though. Good luck!
Overall, when it comes to job hunting in the U.S., I think the ranking of importance goes like this: U.S. work experience >>> U.S. degree >> Chinese work experience = Chinese degree.
Since companies here can’t really verify experience from China, unless you’ve worked at a major corporation or graduated from a Top 2 university or something, I don’t think it carries much weight.
