On May 27, 2025, the Trump administration abruptly ordered a halt to all new F, M, and J visa interviews for international students and exchange visitors. The move comes as part of a broader plan to introduce stricter social media vetting for all applicants.
While previously scheduled interviews will proceed, no new appointments will be accepted until further notice. This decision has sparked concern among international students, universities, and immigration advocates, as it could delay or derail study plans for thousands of students hoping to begin classes in the U.S. this summer or fall.
The administration is reportedly exploring mandatory disclosure of social media handles and increased surveillance of online activity. Critics warn the policy may compromise privacy rights, restrict academic freedom, and damage the reputation of U.S. higher education globally.
The situation is developing, and universities are urging students to stay informed and explore alternative options.
Do you guys think his end goal is really just to limit international students or is it to exert power over higher education and we’re just the collateral?
Honestly, I’ve been wondering the same. It feels like international students are being used as pawns in a bigger game about controlling universities and shaping public narratives. It’s frustrating and unsettling.
And if they’re framing it as a change in the interview process, shouldn’t it have been done in the least disruptive way? I really hope this resolves soon…
The previous policy to revoke F-1 student I-20s was overturned by the court, and the students had their status reinstated. However, it caused significant inconvenience. Let’s wait and see if this will be overturned again. But in the meantime, it has definitely caused unnecessary trouble for international students.
I saw that USC has sent out email to reassure incoming F1s because they felt even with an approved F1, the visa might get revoked soon
Do you think other universities will follow USC and issue similar reassurances? It really feels like most pathways for international students to enter the U.S. are being shut down, at least in the short term.
