Navigating CPT Job Search as an F-1 Student

Hi everyone! I’m currently doing my master’s in the U.S. and just started CPT this semester. I had to complete two full semesters before becoming eligible, and I also had to enroll in a CPT-related course to get approval—so planning ahead was crucial.

Finding a job wasn’t easy. A lot of companies don’t understand CPT, so I focused on platforms like LinkedIn, Indeed, and Handshake, and made sure every position was clearly related to my major. I’m doing part-time CPT (20 hrs/week) during the semester to avoid hitting the 12-month full-time limit, which would cancel my OPT eligibility. Just a reminder—OPT can only be used once per degree level, so use it wisely.

If you can’t find your “dream” CPT job right away, don’t stress. I’ve seen classmates take unpaid or volunteer roles that still count, or work with smaller companies that are more flexible. The key is staying proactive, customizing your applications, and being patient. Rejections are part of the process, but every step helps you grow.

If anyone else is currently going through this, would love to hear what’s working for you!

Thanks for sharing this, @CarrieB — this is such a helpful and honest look at what the CPT job search really feels like!

:white_check_mark: You’re spot on about the challenges — CPT isn’t widely understood, and explaining it to recruiters can feel like a second job. Love that you emphasized major alignment and part-time CPT to protect OPT eligibility — smart move!

Also totally agree: your first CPT role doesn’t have to be perfect. What matters is staying in status, gaining U.S. experience, and keeping the momentum going. Small companies and volunteer gigs can open surprising doors.

:pushpin: Pro tip I’d add: keep a running record of job duties and projects tied to your curriculum — it helps with CPT justification and future visa applications. Check out GoElite’s CPT Employer Database if it helps: Day 1 CPT Employer List - Companies Accept Day 1 CPT

Appreciate your mindset and clarity — rooting for you and anyone else in the same boat!
