Job Applications & Sponsorship Question—How Should I Answer?

Hey everyone,

I keep running into the “Will you now or in the future require sponsorship?” question on job applications, and I’m not sure how to answer it.

Right now, I’m on OPT, but I’m planning to start a program with Day 1 CPT soon, so I technically won’t need sponsorship for a while. I know that checking “Yes” usually gets applications filtered out immediately, but saying “No” feels like lying since I will need it eventually—just not anytime soon.

What do you think?

When I graduated, I always let them know I need the sponsorship.
You can choose “No” if you don’t want to stay in that company for a while or it is just a temporary job. If you need the sponsorship in the future, always choose a “Yes.” I know some ppl told the company that they don’t need it now and performed really well but the company’s policy is not providing any sponsorship, so no matter how hard they try to convince the company, the answer is still a NO.
And actually a lot of companies might note that only Green Card or US Citizen can choose “NO”.

I guess my thought process is that I’m willing to only stay at the company until I need sponsorship - to at least have the experience on my resume, which might help me get jobs with sponsorship afterwards. However, you’re right, some do make it very clear that they’re asking whether you have citizenship or a green card.

For the company, it just comes down to whether you’re a citizen or have a green card.

Totally get where you’re coming from — it’s a tricky question with no perfect answer.

If you’re on OPT (or CPT soon), technically you don’t need sponsorship right now, so some people answer “No” and clarify later in interviews. Others check “Yes” to be fully transparent, but yeah… that often gets your app auto-rejected by filters.

I always select No because h1b is not the only option anyway

I always fill out : I don’t need…

Even when they specify that only citizens and green card holders can select “No”?
