I was told I CAN NOT transfer for day 1 CPT school because I dont have a non usa phone number. Has anyone experienced that?
Do you have any contact at your home country?
You can also considering using your friends or families numbers
do you mean you dont have a working us number? why would that have anything to do with school admissions. who told you this?
I don’t have a working NON us number, I lived in states for a certain amount of years and don’t have a non us number, and was told I am not eligible to apply since I don’t have one, which sounds a little bit too extreme to me.
If it’s me, I might just put on my previous Non-US number or a random number, I don’t think the school really care about it. If your parents or siblings are not in the US, you can also use theirs.
Which university are you applying for? It’s my first time to hear a US phone number is required for university application.
I think @user135 is saying that the school requires a number that is NOT a US number. OP, it might help to know which school this is and if they explained why they require a non-US phone number. Seems like a very strange requirement.
hmmm it sounds like a really weird requirement.,…
They said USCIS and SEVIS requires that, which I can’t find any info to confirm that. And now the whole process makes me suspicious of competency..

I agree, I just think I should have been given an option instead of being told “well sorry, no phone no application for you”
The different representative was able to fix that but now I am sceptical.
You were able to complete the process after speaking to someone else?
I was, thank you. they suggested to add phone number from my friend or family memebr if I had one, but still I guess if I didnt have these sources I wouldn’t be able to apply.. go figure…
I’m glad it worked out!
Might come in late but a possible solution is to get a US Google Voice number with your own phone number.
That’s an unusual situation. Generally, not having a non-U.S. phone number shouldn’t, by itself, prevent you from transferring to a Day 1 CPT school.
However, there are a few possibilities why the school might be saying this:
- Some Day 1 CPT schools require students to prove ties to their home country for compliance reasons, and a non-U.S. number could be one (very weak) indicator of that.
- It might be related to their internal policies for SEVIS transfer or initial I-20 issuance — sometimes, schools want to show stronger proof that students are maintaining “non-immigrant intent.”
- Or it could just be a miscommunication with the admissions office.
In practice, most schools will accept a U.S. number and won’t insist on a non-U.S. number for a transfer. It’s much more important that:
- Your SEVIS status is active or properly transferred
- Your academic and immigration documents are in order
- You meet their admission and CPT participation requirements
Suggestions :
- You could ask them why exactly they require it — sometimes a simple explanation or a letter can satisfy their needs.
- If it’s just about having a non-U.S. number for formality, you could easily get a virtual number from your home country through services like Skype, Google Voice (for some countries), or other providers.
