This actually happened, my friend works at a mid-size tech company, and this is the craziest visa drama in their office right now.
Let’s call the guy “R”.
R was an engineer back in India. His wife got admitted to a PhD program in the U.S. and came here on an F-1 student visa. Naturally, R followed her to the U.S. on an F-2 dependent visa.
At first, he couldn’t work, so he spent his days gaming, cooking, and hanging out at the local Indian stores and temples. Meanwhile, his wife started her OPT and began working, which led to endless arguments at home, “Why can you work and I can’t?”, “Why do you leave me alone at home all day?”, etc. Total drama.
Then it got wild.
R secretly enrolled in a Day 1 CPT MBA program (his wife had no idea), switched himself to an F-1 visa, and started working as a contractor, while also dating a Bangladeshi classmate from the program.
Eventually, his wife found out. They started sleeping in separate rooms and barely speaking.
But here’s the real kicker:
One day, while using R’s laptop, his wife accidentally discovered a wedding planning doc, turns out R and his new girlfriend were planning a Vegas wedding to file for a marriage-based green card (the girl is about to file her 485)!
His wife was devastated. The next day she contacted her school and an immigration lawyer to start divorce proceedings and possibly get his I-20 revoked.
And what does R do? He literally asked my friend at work: “Do you think I could also file an asylum case, just in case?”
Right now, he’s apparently living in an Airbnb and deciding whether to proceed with his marriage plans or try the asylum route. The entire office is watching the saga unfold.
I will share more if there are any updates… As we stay longer in the US, weird and tricky things happen lol
