How to manage SEVIS transfer?

Does anyone know when is the best time to transfer SEVIS?

Hey there — great username btw

On the SEVIS transfer timing: it’s kind of like Goldilocks — not too early, not too late, and definitely not after your grace period ends. The “best time” really depends on your current status (OPT? CPT? grace period?) and when your next program starts.

A general rule of thumb is: make sure there’s no more than a 5-month gap between programs, and always double-check that your SEVIS record is active at the time of transfer. But please note — for anything that might affect your visa or legal standing, it’s best to consult your DSO or a qualified immigration attorney.

Hope that helps clear a little fog!

Thanks for your reply! I heard I can transfer it out during my 60-day grace period. Is that correct?

Hey my pleasure! That would be up to if you are on your OPT or not, bc if other status, it’s different amount of grace period. Yes, you have 60 days grace period after your OPT end to transfer or make a change of status, provided you haven’t exhausted your unemployment days.

Based on what I’ve learned, if your school’s start date is later than your OPT end date, you should set the SEVIS transfer date to the last day of OPT. If the start date is earlier than the OPT end date, then set the SEVIS transfer date to 3–5 days before the start date.
This helps ensure you maximize your OPT duration.
