F-1 Renewal While on CPT

Hi all – hope you are well

Quick inquiry about my case - seeking any advice.

  • I am currently pursuing a Master’s degree at a Day-1 CPT University, program ending in July 2026.
  • My current F-1 visa ends on June of 2025.
  • I am currently using CPT via the University to work at a US company.
  • I would like to go to my country to renew my F-1 visa before it expires.

What is the best course of action here?
Thanks!

You can go back renew your visa during the summer vacation of the school, its safer to exit the country during holiday. Be sure to let the school know and get your I-20 signature.

I used to work at a school’s international office, check these things:

  1. NEVER leave when class in session
  2. what is your country’s F1 visa approval rate?
  3. Your valid passport, I-20 with travel signature
  4. Is there a better location to stamp your F1 visa

Your F-1 visa expiring in June 2025 does not affect your legal stay in the U.S. as long as you maintain valid F-1 status (which is determined by your I-20, SEVIS record, and enrollment).

• However, if you leave the U.S., you must obtain a new F-1 visa to re-enter.

Are you planning to use OPT afterwards or once the program ends, that’s it? if that’s it, you may want to see if you can get H1B this year first. it is risky since you only got couple month left on your program. your visa application might got rejected for this reason especially considering your curriculum has too many online classes. better figure out what’s next, then make the move.
