I am considering Day1 CPT as I didn’t get selected in my last attempt of the H1B.
Wanted to know somethings related to travel during pursuing Day1 CPT: Is it safe to travel to my home country during DAY1 CPT? Can I travel in the breaks between the semesters? I have heard that we can take a break semester after completing some credits. Note: I will have to get my VISA renewed and get stamping if I do so as my VISA is expiring soon.
Has anyone here done so in the past and how was your experience?
Traveling during Day 1 CPT is possible, but there are definitely some risks — especially if your visa is expiring and you need to get it renewed while you’re abroad.
Some things to keep in mind:
Visa stamping while on Day 1 CPT can raise questions at the embassy, especially if the officer isn’t familiar with CPT rules or thinks your work-study setup looks like full-time work.
Traveling during semester breaks is more common, but always make sure your SEVIS is active, and your I-20 has a valid travel signature.
As for taking a break semester — some schools do allow it after a certain number of credits, but it depends on the program and DSO approval. You’ll need to stay in status during that time, so don’t assume it’s automatic.
If your visa is expiring soon, I’d say talk to your DSO first and think carefully before leaving. Reentry isn’t guaranteed, and if you’re relying on CPT for work, getting stuck outside would be rough.
While it’s not explicitly prohibited, re-entering the U.S. while on Day 1 CPT can carry some risks, especially during visa renewal/stamping. Immigration officers may scrutinize whether the program is compliant with F-1 regulations, particularly if the school is known for offering Day 1 CPT.
