What is the Top 3 Work from home cities? (Expenses)

Recently visited Washington DC and think it is really good for working from home, lower sales tax (almost half of Los Angeles/New York), top safety and places to visits and to eat at.

What cities do you recommend for remote work?
My top options that I’ve visited are Portland Oregon, (no sales tax); Washington DC as mentioned, and probably somewhere in Texas, because of the cost of living and income tax.

qol is more important to me than sales tax lol

Welcome to Texas! Texas is good, large Indian community here(if you’re Indian). The house is not too expensive compared with Bay Area and also LA.

but it’s also texas lol

It really depends on whether you like a true “city city” with convenient public transportation.

If you enjoy driving, places like Portland, Texas, Delaware, and Nevada could be great options. But if you’re not a fan of driving, you might want to consider cities with better transit access, like parts of New Jersey (satellite cities near NYC), Boston, Astoria, or Washington, DC. All of those are great picks for car-free living!

Absolutely Texas!! and I think this city is also becoming more and more fun tho

Great list—you’ve already hit some of the sweet spots for remote work: low/no sales tax, livable costs, and a good mix of amenities.

A few more worth considering:

  • Seattle, WA – No state income tax, strong coffee culture, plenty of coworking spots, though cost of living is higher than Portland.

  • Boulder, CO – Smaller city with great outdoor access, safe neighborhoods, and solid broadband coverage; pricier housing but incredible quality of life.

  • Austin, TX – The obvious Texas pick—vibrant food/music scene, no state income tax, and a growing remote-friendly community.

  • Raleigh-Durham, NC – Affordable, great weather, Research Triangle’s tech infrastructure, and a surprising food scene.

  • Madison, WI – Progressive vibe, lower housing costs, great bike lanes, and a strong local culture. Winters are cold, but summers are amazing.

  • Salt Lake City, UT – Affordable, mountain views, good safety scores, and a lot of outdoor recreation close by.

For me, the sweet spot is a place with low taxes + reliable internet + cultural amenities + good safety. You can always travel to “excitement” cities when you want a change of pace.
